New Study, Old News

Breaking News on "The Gay Lifestyle"...

Episcopal Cafe is points us to a new study in the journal Developmental Psychology, on committed gay, lesbian and heterosexual relationships. A key paragraph from the conclusions:

The current study adds to this literature by demonstrating that, controlling for demographic differences, gay males and lesbians in our studies were generally not distinguishable from their committed heterosexual counterparts on measures of self- and partner reported relationship quality, as well as in how they interacted with one another—and responded physiologically—while attempting to resolve conflict in their relationships.

Translation: Far as these researchers can tell, gay and lesbian committed relationships look to be as psychologically healthy as committed heterosexual relationships. (A link to the pdf of the paper is here)

SOOOOOOOO ... The "breaking news" on "The Gay Lifestyle" is ... THERE ISN'T "ONE!"

Our relationships are just as stable or unstable, as boring or exciting, as healthy or unhealthy, as satisfying or frustrating as EVERYBODY ELSE'S!

My first response to this study, emailed by a colleague earlier today, was the title I chose for this blog, "New Study, Old News." His response was to point to the importance of "scientific verification" ... which in and of itself is a GOOD thing, no question about that.

But let's face it ... the same folks who are going to continue to picket our ordinations and insist on our exclusion and wring their hands about "family values" are the same ones who insist that "creationism" is a "science" and who reject evolution as an apostate, heretic theory.

Why bother with facts when you have absolute truth on your side? (And that makes them different than other manifestations of rabid fundamentalism riping the world apart how????? Exactly!)

If that is the best you can do, you are in trouble. Half the trouble in the world is probably caused by bad heterosexual relationships, maybe more. ;-)

No life style eh? Boy that is gonna really dissapoint the purient!

There we go again, relying upon that overly political "science" stuff rather than a slavish adherance to the Written Word of God which descended from heaven, red letters and all.

Well, I'm not picketing ordinations anytime soon. Nor do I care to exclude homosexuals (or any other sinners) from church.

But if you think that everyone who opposes consecrating non-celibate homosexuals or celebrating homosexual relationships also consider "creationism" a science and evolution as heresy, you're wrong. Funny how those who get so angry at being falsely categorized (part of the very point of this point, isn't it) are so quick to do so to those who oppose them.

Note to ronf ... then, just perhaps, my friend ... this post is NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU! (AKA, "if the shoe doesn't fit, don't try to cram your foot into it and then complain that it pinches!")

I'm glad you're not an ordination picketer. But they're out there. And if you're not a creationist then good for you twice over. But that doesn't mean those folks aren't out there. Ergo the post.

Thanks for taking time to comment.

After 44 years I have a relationship. He's a Presby and I'm a Piskie. Our life isn't about sex, bars and all the stuff usually attributed to the gay lifestyle and most of our friends, well almost all are straight.
I'd like to think in most aspects we're just like our parents. I guess we'd disappoint most who'd label us as an aboration. Oh well, sorry to burst your bubble.

I use to believe as Frair John did but then I read a book called "Who Wrote the Bible?"
by Richard Elliott Friedman.
It might be very enlightening.

Hope you all find the peace and happiness I've been given. I like to think it was a gift from Heaven.

Ummm, Bob, that was me being sarcastic.

Don't forget, Frair John, that before that KJV red letter edition fell from Heaven onto England's green and pleasant land, the Book of Common Prayer got there first. In fact, it probably landed just a few feet away. God has great aim, you know. Or, of course, it's possible that the 1662 edition came down about the same time and slid under a bush and nobody found it for a while.

My apologies Friar, I can't read sarcasm on these things ughhh.

Hey though, the book really is enlightening.

Hopefully I get to know the poster's here better.

Again, Sorry,
Peace

The real problem with the books falling to earth from God's hands and landing in England is that Nigeria has been jealous ever since!
