"Great Expectations" on Easter Monday

It's Easter Monday ... a day when the post-Easter Day stupor endemic in parish clergydom is antithetical to any original thoughts. Happily, today and tomorrow are days off ... the Dodgers' season opener in Pittsburgh is on TV and there's a Sunday paper to catch up on -- including this worth-sharing essay from yesterday's New York Times Sunday Magazine.

So enjoy ... and remember: we didn't do 40 days of Lent to celebrate just ONE day of Easter ... so give thanks for the 50 Days of Easter ahead even as we recover with gratitude from Easter Day. Alleluia, Alleluia!

I’ve decided that faith is what some facts are made of and that the true meaning of Easter isn’t just the escape from sin and death but, in part, the escape from thought itself, one of humanity’s direst oppressors and, perhaps, the hardest to shake off.

Using "biblical standards" to condemn those who understand that sexual orientation is morally neutral makes as much sense as using "biblical standards" to condemn astronomers who understand that the earth revolves around the sun. The Bible may have said it but that doesn't always settle it.

It's liberty and justice for all -- not some. It's respect the dignity of every human being -- not just straight ones. Got it? Great. Let's do it.

In order to keep moving forward toward liberty and justice for all we can't just be right about what the 1st Amendment protects. We have to be smart about how we respond to those who skipped the 9th Commandment and think lying is a Traditional Family Value.
